Election Qualifications

To be eligible for office in the City of West Point 

No person shall be eligible to the office of mayor or council member of the City of West Point unless he or she shall have met all qualifications for such candidacy as set forth in the Constitution and statutes of the State of Georgia.

Terms of Office

The date for the conduct of municipal elections for the city shall be as established by the laws and Constitution of the State of Georgia. On such election date in every fourth year an election shall be held for a mayor whose term of office shall be four years and until his successor is elected and qualified. On the date set by state law for the conduct of municipal elections and biennially thereafter there shall be held an election at which three council members shall be elected for a term of four years to succeed the council members whose terms of office shall have expired at the date of such election. Such council members shall hold office until their successors are elected and qualified.

Taking Office

Elected officials take office the second Monday in January after the election. Any person desiring to become a candidate shall file written notice with the City Clerk. Qualifying dates are set by state law. Qualifying fees, as required by state law, will be $151.20 for Council and $214.20 for Mayor. Qualifying fees shall accompany notice of candidacy. 

Voting Information

You must be registered prior to registrations dead line as a resident within the City of West Point to participate in City elections. Voter Registration The Troup County and Harris County Voter Registration Offices handles voter registration for all residents regardless of the city in the county or unincorporated area where the reside.
